Fuse Board Upgrades: When, Why and What It Costs

The fuse board tucked away under your stairs or in the garage is the single most important safety device in your home. It is the point where the incoming supply is split into the individual circuits that feed your sockets, lights, cooker and shower — and it is the part that is meant to disconnect the power the instant something goes wrong. Fuse board or consumer unit — what is the difference?

They are the same piece of kit, described a generation apart. “Fuse board” is the traditional name and usually conjures the old-style unit with rewireable fuse carriers — little ceramic or plastic holders with a length of fuse wire you replace by hand. “Consumer unit” is the modern term, and today’s boards use miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) and residual current devices (RCDs), or increasingly RCBOs, which combine both functions in a single module.

The practical difference matters. A rewireable fuse simply melts when overloaded and does nothing to protect you from an electric shock. An RCD, by contrast, monitors the current flowing out and back and trips within milliseconds if it detects electricity leaking to earth — for example through a person touching a live part or water getting into a fitting. That shock protection is the core reason the standards have moved on.

What the 18th Edition requires

Modern installations are wired to BS 7671 (18th Edition), the current UK wiring regulations. A few requirements are directly relevant when you replace a board:

  • A non-combustible enclosure. Since January 2016 (Regulation 421.1.201), domestic consumer units must have a non-combustible — in practice, metal — enclosure. This followed a pattern of fires starting inside plastic boards. If your board is plastic, it predates this rule.
  • RCD protection on most circuits. Most final circuits now require 30mA RCD protection. Modern boards are typically full RCBO, meaning every circuit is individually protected. The benefit is that a fault on one circuit trips only that circuit — so a faulty kettle does not plunge your whole house, or half of it, into darkness.
  • Surge protection. A Type 2 surge protection device (SPD) is required in most new domestic installations (Regulation 443.4). This guards sensitive electronics — boilers, TVs, computers — against voltage spikes from the grid or nearby lightning.

A note on AFDDs from 2026

From Amendment 4:2026 (in effect 15 April 2026), arc fault detection devices (AFDDs) are required on socket final circuits up to 32A in higher-risk residential buildings — such as HMOs, high-rise flats, and student or care accommodation. AFDDs detect the dangerous arcing that can precede an electrical fire. For most single-family homes in Billericay this is not yet a mandatory requirement, but if you are a landlord letting an HMO in the area it is worth raising with your electrician, as it may affect your board specification.

Signs it is time to upgrade

You do not need to replace a board simply because it is old, but several signs point strongly towards an upgrade:
